Needs Assessment Interviews and Reviews

Short interview to be conducted with students during First Lesson, or when no/limited information is listed in Course Objectives on Planyo.

List of targeted questions:

  1. How often do you speak English at work?
  2. In which situations / activities? (E.g. meetings, presentations,training, business travel, seminars, conferences, social, etc)
    [Here we want to determine business situations to prioritise].
  3. When you speak during meetings (or presentations, etc) what is itthat you find (particularly) difficult? For example: Asking Questions,Disagreeing, Making Your Point, etc
    [Here we want to determine Language Functions to focus on].
  4. What are your immediate needs / future needs (E.g. will relocateto USA next year, but have some presentations coming up soon).
    [To prioritise immediate needs].
  5. Why are you taking this training? What do you hope to achieveduring this course?

[Often students provide a more personal reason or mention something that didn’t come up before – this could also be useful for customising their course – they could also be vague: e.g. more fluency] The above should not take more than 10 minutes. It provides speaking practice for the student and notes can be filled at the same time.

Notes:

  • For 10+ hours courses, reassessments should be done periodically.
  • When a student transfers from another teacher after several lessons with that teacher, it’s worth doing a quick Q&A again if the student plans to have consecutive lessons with the new teacher.
